Golden Valley’s first cold snaps are coming, and if your chimney’s been neglected, you’re playing with fire. Don’t wait for a blocked flue or carbon monoxide alarm to act. Sunset Chimney Inc. sees these 5 warning signs in Golden Valley homes every fall. If you spot any, call before the rush hits.
Myth: ‘My chimney looks fine, no smoke means it’s safe.’ Fact: Golden Valley’s dry air hides dangerous creosote buildup.
A clean chimney shouldn’t smell like smoke when the fire’s out. If you catch a whiff of that acrid, tarry odor indoors after burning wood, your chimney’s lining up creosote, fast. Golden Valley’s low humidity turns creosote into a sticky, flammable mess in weeks, not months. Check our creosote guide to see what stage yours is in. Pro tip: If your damper’s rusted shut or you’ve burned softwood (pine, fir), assume it’s worse than it looks. Book a sweep before October, our crews in Golden Valley and nearby Robbinsdale fill up fast.
‘I’ll just sweep it myself’: Why Golden Valley homeowners regret DIY chimney work (and the one thing you can check now).
DIY chimney sweeps go wrong in Golden Valley when homeowners skip the inspection. A brush alone won’t catch cracked flue tiles or blocked caps, both fire hazards. Here’s what you can do now: Shine a flashlight up the chimney from the fireplace. See soot clinging to the walls like black graffiti? That’s creosote. Hear a hissing sound when you light a fire? Your chimney’s pulling air from the house, not outside. See our DIY limits, then call us. Our licensed crews use cameras to spot what you can’t, and we’ll give you a no-pressure quote. Schedule before September 15 to avoid weekend waitlists.
